The TranzAlpine train is back! But, unfortunately, the NORTHERN EXPLORER (Auckland - Wellington) & COASTAL PACIFIC (Picton - Christchurch) is still suspended until the mid-2022.
Additional dates for the TranzAlpine train are being finalized. Once confirmed, we will add this to our website. 
TranzAlpine operating days. 14 Jan - 27 May (Friday to Monday) | 04 June - 28 August (Saturdays & Sundays) | 02 September - 31 December (Friday to Monday). Additional Operating days due to high demands - April 07, 13, 14, 19 | June 03, 06, 24, 27 | July 08, 11, 15, 18. Scheduled Track Maintenance - May 28-30 | July 23-25 | August 13-15 All full cancellations No bus replacements. 
Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific remain suspended until mid-2022. 
Face masks are now mandatory on all journeys, except when consuming food or drink.
We understand that Covid-19 continues to add uncertainty in planning. Should there be cancellation of services due to Covid 19 restrictions, we will offer affected customers a transfer to an alternative date, a credit for 12 months, or a refund, regardless of the fare purchased less a $30 processing fee for the entire reservation.

Northern Explorer: Auckland-Wellington-Auckland train service

Regional passenger train services in New Zealand

Alongside the three long distance passenger train services in New Zealand there are also two regional passenger train services.

  • The Capital Connection train operates between Wellington and Palmerston North Monday to Friday 
  • The Wairapapa Connection train operates between Wellington and Masterton seven days a week.

There are no overnight regional or long distance passenger train services in New Zealand.

Travel to other major tourist destinations in New Zealand is by scenic bus and coach services from either Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch or Greymouth.
